Kel looked up. He could see the two mounted companies thundering down the slope, lances in hand, hear the cries of the men. Beside him Carl A’denné huffed like Tuwar Estenford. For a moment the fighting seemed to have moved away from them.

“Do you have faith in the loyalties of the Duke of Vast?” Kel shouted over the din.

“Utter faith.”

“Let it not be misplaced.”

Beneath the banners of the Wills, men began to tumble off their horses as they came within range of the Renné archers. Horses fell, causing others to topple over them, but still they came.

“They will meet just before they reach us,” Lord Carl said.

Kel turned toward the young man, who looked like a boy dressed up in his father’s armor.

“Let me cut you out of that crimson,” Kel said, “before someone murders you.”

“No. I must go back. I have my side of an agreement to keep.”

“But men saw you here defending me.”

“They’re all dead, and we are hidden by the trees.”

“You take a great risk.”

But the young man only saluted him with a sword and set off at a gallop, back into the fray.

“And I would not give the order to preserve him or his father,” Kel said, wondering at the strange turns life took.

He waited only a moment before following. The battle swayed in the balance, neither side holding the advantage. He heard the crash of the two armed companies driving one into the other and knew that much would be decided there. He threw himself into the fighting around the bridge, which was a fire now. Men with buckets threw the river onto the flames to preserve their link to the other shore.

Kel found Tuwar, and the two of them tried to force a path to the bridge.

“Vast!” someone shouted. “Vast will carry them!” Others took up the Duke’s name and it became a battle cry. “Vast! Vast!”

But the battle for the bridge still raged, swaying back and forth like a cornered serpent.
